Redesign of "Eleftherias Square", in Thessaloniki
Participation in Architectural Competition
Location: Thessaloniki
Surface: 11,4 m2
Supervision: 2013
Client: Municipality of Thessaloniki

The contest requires the redesign of "Eleftherias Square", in the city center of Thessaloniki. From an overall perspective, the proposal was composed as a gentle intervention of frugal architectural style, which discreetly illustrates the versatile roles of the square, in tandem with the importance of the historical overtone of the region. Functionally, the site is divided in smaller unities that constitute discreet parts of different spatial qualities: the gate, the memorial field, the central “stage”, the gardens, the observation platform. Special emphasis is given to the dynamics of the North-South axis, which is promoted through the design of an ortho- canonical grid, aiming at the incorporation of the square into the “Ippodamius” system of Thessaloniki. Different materials point out different activities and unities in the internal part of the square. An equally important design criterion was the embedding of bioclimatic design principles.
