The proposed load-carrying structure of Messara museum in Crete is a one-floor building with basement for a part of it. Due to the large scale of the building both horizontal and vertical bracing members are introduced in seven points. Furthermore, notably large shear walls are used ensuring small displacements, under almost every possible earthquake excitation, for the exhibits protection. For the long spans steel structures have been implemented (where necessary), including Cellular beams, i.e. H cross-sections with circular holes on the web for reducing the self weight and making easy the electro-mechanical facilities installation.
